The Matsue Suigosai fires fireworks on two consecutive nights over Lake Shinji — the lake famous for Japan's most photographed sunsets — with a combined 21,000 shells launched from four barges. Watch the sun drop into the lake, then the same water light up with wide starmines: the castle town's summer at its best.
Background
Matsue's lakeside festival tradition goes back to the 1920s and settled into today's two-night format as the city's largest annual event, its scale unusual for the San'in region.
Getting there
The venue is the Lake Shinji eastern shore around Shirakata Park, 10–15 minutes on foot from JR Matsue Station (about 3 hours from Okayama by Yakumo limited express).
Tips
- Two nights means flexibility: the second night has the bigger program, the first the thinner crowd.
- Position yourself by 6:30pm for the sunset-into-fireworks sequence — the lakefront's western exposure is the whole point.
- Matsue Castle (one of Japan's twelve original keeps) and a lake cruise fill the daytime perfectly.
- Hotel supply in Matsue is decent but the two-night format concentrates demand — book a few months out.
