Part of the Mito Komon Festival, this show launches about 5,000 shells over Senba Lake in the middle of Mito City, with the water doubling every burst as a mirror. It is a manageable, city-scale festival — big enough for two-shaku-class shells and music-synced starmines, small enough that you can arrive at dinnertime and still find a lakeside spot.
Background
The Mito Komon Festival honors the city's famous Edo-period lord Tokugawa Mitsukuni (the 'Mito Komon' of TV drama fame), and the lakeside fireworks night has been its summer centerpiece for over 60 years.
Getting there
Senba Lake is a 15-minute walk south of JR Mito Station (Joban Line limited express, about 75 minutes from Tokyo/Ueno). The whole lake perimeter functions as the viewing area.
Tips
- The west bank facing the launch pontoons gives the closest view; the east side pairs the bursts with their reflection for photos.
- It's an easy day trip from Tokyo — trains back to Ueno run late enough that lodging isn't necessary.
- Rain slides it to the following evening rather than cancelling, unusual for a mid-size festival.
- Combine with Kairakuen garden at sunset — one of Japan's three great gardens is a short bus ride away.
