Ryukyu Kaiensai on Ginowan's Tropical Beach is 'Japan's earliest summer fireworks' — a ticketed April beach event where about 10,000 shells synchronized to music mark the start of Okinawa's beach season, months before the mainland's festivals begin. Palm trees, warm night air, and shells over the East China Sea.
Background
Launched in 2004 as a produced, ticketed show rather than a traditional festival, it deliberately claims the earliest slot on Japan's fireworks calendar and has become Okinawa's signature pyrotechnic event.
Getting there
The venue is Ginowan Seaside Park (Tropical Beach), about 40 minutes by car or bus from Naha; shuttle and route buses run from Naha Bus Terminal on the day.
Tips
- It's fully ticketed — no free beach viewing inside the venue — with tiers from lawn to premium seats; buy early via the official site.
- April in Okinawa is warm but breezy at night: light jacket, sandals, no need for summer-festival heat tactics.
- Traffic on Route 58 after the finale is the island's worst hour of the year — staying in the Ginowan convention-city area beats returning to Naha same-night.
- Since the 2026 edition has already passed (April 11), plan for the next year's show — dates announce in winter.
